Dangal (2016)
A former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his two wrestler daughters' face of societal oppression. Well there is one thing about every Aamir Khan release. He features in films that are easy to like. He rarely gives opportunities to dislike his product as a whole. “Dangal” follows suite, and is easily the most convincing one compared to the previous outings. Convincing because I felt this is Khan’s best performance since #RangDeBasanti. He and Sakshi Tanwar reduce pages of dialogues to two simple shots of merely expressing with the eyes. It is such rousing performances that take this straight-forward film to inspiring heights.
So our lead character, Mahavir Singh Phogat, isn’t a likable one. He slaps his own dreams on his daughters. (Rancho is screams in a parallel universe) He forcefully shreds their hair, he disapproves them off any social entertainment. The guy is a prick, to be honest. He has set a singular goal in life and everything that he deems unnecessary to this, is a sin. The film doesn’t really want us to like him. In fact it so clearly doesn’t judge him. There is no negative music playing in the background as he forces his daughters into doing something. There is no sense of melodrama as he grills them into the grind. Yes, he is a menace. Fortunately the film simplifies the same. It is a Disney film for the sake of the children watching it, but I bet the real story had ten times the grit. Yet I am not saying the film has compromised in any way to lighten things up. It gets everything right with regards to tone.
